City to City

From One Expensive City to Another, on Purpose

People rarely move from San Francisco to New York to save money. They go for the work, in finance, media, fashion and a fast-growing tech scene, and for a city where you can walk or take the subway almost anywhere. The seasons, the museums, the universities and the sheer energy do the rest.

The costs shift rather than vanish. Homes can cost less than in San Francisco, but Manhattan rent is often higher and the city adds its own income tax on top of the state's. Here is a rough comparison.

The Hard Part

New York Delivery Logistics, Explained

The drive is long but predictable. The real challenge is the last hundred feet. New York buildings have rules that can stop a delivery cold if they are not handled ahead of time. If you are downsizing, our guide to lightening your load helps you decide what to leave behind.

Certificate of insurance

Most managed buildings and co-ops require a COI from the mover naming the building before they let a crew in. Send us your management office contact and we take care of it.

Elevator and move windows

Many buildings allow moves only on weekdays in set hours, with a reserved service elevator. Your delivery is booked inside that window.

Walk-ups

Brownstones and older buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan often have no elevator and narrow stairs. Measure your largest pieces before you ship them.

Smaller trucks for the last leg

Some streets cannot take a full-size truck. When that happens, your goods move to a smaller vehicle for final delivery.

Moving into a smaller New York apartment? Most Bay Area households ship less than they expect to. Measure your new rooms first and sell or donate what will not fit before the walkthrough, so your estimate reflects only what is actually going.
Schedule

Your Cross-Country Timeline

Six to eight weeks out

Video or in-home walkthrough and a written estimate. Ask your new building for its move-in rules now.

Three weeks out

Lock the pickup date, file your San Francisco street permit and book the NYC elevator time.

Pickup

Full packing if you want it, then wrapping, labeling and an itemized inventory before the truck leaves.

Transit, 10–18 business days

The truck heads east, usually on I-80. Your coordinator gives you updates and confirms the delivery day.

Delivery

The crew carries everything in, places it room by room and reassembles furniture.
