How It Works

What a Long-Distance Move Actually Involves

Understanding the mechanics helps you compare movers and avoid surprises.

A cross-country move is priced and managed differently from a local one. Local moves are usually billed by the hour. Interstate moves are priced mainly on the weight or volume of your shipment and the distance it travels, plus any extra services such as packing, crating, storage or difficult access. Federal rules from the FMCSA govern the paperwork, estimates and claims.

Inventory first

Everything starts with an accurate list of what is moving. We build it from a free virtual or in-home survey, not a guess over the phone.

Written estimate

You receive the estimate in writing, with the services itemized, before you commit to a date.

Bill of lading

On moving day you sign a bill of lading, the contract for your shipment, and receive an itemized inventory.

Delivery window

Your coordinator sets an expected delivery window based on distance and route, then keeps you updated.

Binding vs. Non-Binding Estimates

Both types are available from Abwini. Federal rules for interstate moves also limit how much a mover can collect at delivery on a non-binding estimate.

Which one is right depends on how settled your plans are. If you know exactly what is going, a binding estimate locks the number. If you are still deciding what to sell or donate, a non-binding estimate may fit better. Our guide to what affects moving prices explains the main cost drivers.

Start to Finish

Your Interstate Move, Step by Step

Survey

Walk us through your home by video or schedule an in-home visit so we can list every room and specialty item.

Estimate and booking

Review your written estimate, choose binding or non-binding, pick protection and confirm your pickup date.

Packing and loading

Crews pack if you have chosen packing, wrap furniture, tag each item and complete the inventory with you.

Transit

Your shipment travels under our own authority. Your coordinator is your single point of contact the whole way.

Delivery

We unload, place furniture by room, reassemble what we took apart and check the inventory with you.

Protection

How Your Belongings Are Covered

Every interstate move includes Released Value Protection at no extra cost. It is basic coverage set by federal rules at 60 cents per pound per article, which is modest for valuable items. Full Value Protection is available if you want the mover responsible for repair, replacement or the current value of damaged or lost items. Your coordinator will explain the options before you book.

Make a list of high-value items, anything worth more than about 100 dollars per pound, and tell your coordinator before moving day so it is documented on the inventory.
