Moving from California to Massachusetts

Boston's narrow streets, walk-ups and parking permits make the last block of a cross-country move the hardest. We plan for them from the start and deliver across Massachusetts, typically within 7–14 business days.

The Reality

Why Boston Moves Need a Different Plan

Most of the people we move from California to Massachusetts are heading for universities, hospitals, biotech labs or finance jobs in and around Boston and Cambridge. That means older housing stock: triple-deckers, brownstones, walk-up apartments and streets laid out long before 53-foot trailers existed. The drive east is long but simple. Delivery day is where the planning pays off.

Street parking permits

Boston, Cambridge, Somerville and Brookline generally require a moving-truck permit and posted signs to reserve curb space. Apply early, since some cities need a week or more.

Walk-ups and tight stairs

Triple-deckers often have narrow, turning staircases. We measure sofas and box springs in advance and may hoist or disassemble large pieces.

Shuttle trucks

When a full trailer cannot reach your door, we transfer to a smaller truck for the final stretch. Your estimate will note when that is likely.

Building rules

Back Bay and Seaport buildings often require certificates of insurance, elevator reservations and weekday-only move hours.

Avoid September 1 if you can. Much of Greater Boston's rental market turns over on that single day, so streets, elevators and trucks are overloaded. Arriving a few days before or after usually makes delivery far smoother.

Delivery

Your coordinator calls ahead, the crew carries everything in, places it and reassembles furniture.

Winter adds another layer. Nor'easters can drop heavy snow from December through March, and city parking bans during snow emergencies can cancel a permit for the day. Spring and early fall are the most reliable times for a Massachusetts delivery.
