What You Gain by Decluttering First

Interstate moves are generally priced by the weight of your shipment and the distance it travels. That means the old treadmill in the garage and the boxes you never opened after your last move carry a real cost. Decluttering before your estimate also gives your mover a more accurate inventory, which makes a binding quote more reliable.

Lower cost

Less weight on the truck means a smaller shipment to price. Fewer boxes also means fewer packing materials and less labor.

Faster days

Every item you do not own is an item nobody wraps, carries, loads, unloads or unpacks.

A cleaner start

Your new home fills with things you chose on purpose instead of things that came along by default.

A Step-by-Step Decluttering Plan

  1. Start four to six weeks outGive yourself time to sell and donate. Rushed decluttering usually turns into packing everything and sorting it later, which costs more.
  2. Begin where you live leastGuest rooms, attics, garages and storage closets hold the easiest decisions. Early wins build momentum before you reach the kitchen.
  3. Use four piles in every roomKeep, Donate, Sell and Discard. Label four large boxes or mark four corners of the room so nothing drifts back into the keep pile.
  4. Book your estimate after the first passOnce the obvious items are gone, schedule your walkthrough so the inventory reflects what is really moving.
  5. Clear the house as you goSchedule donation pickups and list sale items weekly. Piles that sit in the hallway tend to get packed by accident.
A useful rule: if you have not used something in a year, or you forgot you owned it, it belongs in the Donate or Sell pile unless it carries real sentimental value.

Questions to Ask When You Cannot Decide

  • Have I used this in the past twelve months?
  • Is it still in good working condition?
  • Do I already own another one that does the same job?
  • Will it fit the rooms, climate and lifestyle of the new place?
  • Would it be cheaper to replace than to ship across the country?

That last question matters more than people expect. Inexpensive particleboard furniture, worn mattresses and bulky patio sets are often cheaper to replace after you arrive than to pad, load and transport over a thousand miles. Heirlooms, quality hardwood pieces and items you cannot easily find again are the ones worth the space on the truck.

Where the Weight Hides

AreaCommon weightTypical decision
GarageTools, paint, exercise gear, old lumberSell gear, dispose of paint and chemicals properly
BookshelvesBooks, magazines, bindersKeep favorites, donate the rest, scan important papers
KitchenDuplicate pans, small appliances, pantryKeep one of each, use up food before moving day
ClosetsClothes, shoes, linensKeep what you wore this year and what suits the new climate
Storage areasHoliday decor, keepsake bins, old electronicsOpen every box and recycle e-waste through a certified drop-off

What to Do With Everything That Is Not Coming

Book charity pickups early, since many organizations schedule a week or more ahead and some will not take mattresses or upholstered furniture. List larger items on online marketplaces with clear photos and a firm pickup deadline. A garage sale works best for many small items at once, about two to three weeks before the move.

For discards, recycle electronics at a certified facility and shred documents with personal or financial details. Movers cannot transport hazardous materials such as propane tanks, paint thinner, pool chemicals or aerosol cans, so plan to give them away or dispose of them at a household hazardous waste site.

Moving Only What Matters

Once your keep pile is final, the rest is logistics. Our professional packing services can handle everything or just the fragile pieces, and short- or long-term storage covers anything you are not ready to decide on yet. For the bigger picture, see our 8 to 12 week moving checklist.

How much can decluttering lower my moving cost?

It depends on how much you remove, but because long-distance moves are priced largely on weight and distance, every item you let go of reduces what you pay to ship. Ask for your estimate after you declutter so it reflects the smaller load.

When should I start decluttering for a long-distance move?

Four to six weeks before moving day is a good minimum. Larger homes or households with full garages benefit from starting even earlier.

What items will movers not take?

Hazardous materials such as flammable liquids, propane, paint, ammunition and corrosive chemicals cannot go on the truck. Perishable food and plants are also usually excluded on long-distance moves.

Should I sell furniture or move it?

Move pieces that are well made, valuable or hard to replace. Inexpensive or worn furniture is often cheaper to replace after you arrive.
