Moving feels stressful mostly because the price feels uncertain. It does not have to be. Every quote is built from a short list of inputs: labor, time, weight, distance, materials and access at each end. Once you understand how those pieces combine, you can read an estimate line by line and spot a number that does not make sense.

How Local Moves Are Priced

Local moves, usually anything within roughly 50 to 100 miles, are billed by the hour. In 2026 a professional two-person crew generally runs $120 to $180 per hour. Your total depends on how much you own, how many people are on the crew and how easy your homes are to work in.

Property sizeTypical crewLabor hoursEstimated cost
1-bedroom apartment2 movers3 – 5 hours$650 – $1,100
3-bedroom home3 movers7 – 10 hours$1,800 – $3,200
5+ bedroom estate4+ movers12 – 16 hours$3,800+

Planning ranges only. Stairs, elevators, long walks to the truck and packing all change the hours.

  • Crew size: a bigger crew costs more per hour but often finishes a large home for less in total
  • Travel time: most companies bill a travel fee for the trip to your door and back
  • Truck and equipment: some quotes list the truck, fuel and pads separately from labor

Decoding Long-Distance Moving Math

Interstate moves, such as Los Angeles to Denver or San Diego to Phoenix, are priced on the weight or volume of your shipment and the distance it travels, not on hours. The carrier's tariff sets the rate structure, and mileage and fuel are the biggest overheads.

Weight

The heavier the shipment, the more it costs. Decluttering before your estimate is the fastest way to lower the number.

Distance

More miles mean more fuel, more driver hours and more time on the road.

Service type

A consolidated load shared with other households costs less but has wider delivery windows. Exclusive use of a truck costs more and moves faster.

Season

Summer is peak demand. Fall and winter dates usually bring better availability.

For interstate moves, ask for a binding not-to-exceed estimate. If your shipment weighs more than estimated, you still pay no more than the quoted price, and if it weighs less, you pay the lower weight-based amount.

What Professional Packing Adds

Poor packing is one of the most common causes of damage claims, so packing is partly an insurance decision. Costs split into labor and materials. Packing labor is often quoted around $60 – $100 per hour, and materials are charged by what you use.

MaterialTypical priceUse in a 3-bedroom
Small and medium boxes$3.50 – $5.00 each40 – 60 boxes
Double-walled dish barrels$8.00 – $12.00 each10 – 15 boxes
Custom crating for marble or art$150 – $450As required
Heavy-duty packing tape$4.00 per roll12 – 18 rolls

Add-On Charges to Ask About Up Front

  • Long carry: the truck cannot park within about 75 feet of your door
  • Stairs or flights: carrying items above the first floor without an elevator
  • Shuttle: a large trailer cannot reach your street, so a smaller truck ferries goods
  • Bulky items: pianos, safes, hot tubs and heavy exercise equipment
  • Storage in transit: holding your shipment when the new home is not ready

None of these are unfair on their own. The problem is learning about them on moving day. A thorough walkthrough, in person or by video, lets the estimate account for them in writing. Our breakdown of what affects moving prices goes deeper on each one.

Released Value vs. Full Value Protection

Released Value Protection is included at no extra charge, but it pays only $0.60 per pound per item. A 50-pound television worth $2,000 would be covered for about $30. Full Value Protection makes the mover responsible for repairing the item, replacing it or paying its current market value, and it is worth considering for any household with valuable furniture, electronics or art.

What is the cheapest day to move?

Midweek and mid-month dates usually see the lowest demand. Tuesday through Thursday, away from the first and last days of the month, are often easier to book.

Should I pay for Full Value Protection?

If your belongings are worth more than $0.60 per pound, and most are, Full Value Protection gives much stronger coverage than the free Released Value option.

How much should I tip movers?

Tipping is optional. A common guideline is $30-$50 per mover for a full day, or more for a long or difficult job.

How early should I book to lock in a price?

Six to eight weeks ahead for long-distance moves and three to four weeks for local moves gives you the best choice of dates.
