How Moving Costs Are Calculated

Local moves are usually priced by time, meaning crew size multiplied by hours, plus travel and materials. Interstate moves, such as San Diego to Phoenix, are priced primarily on the weight of the shipment and the distance it travels. On both kinds of move, access matters: stairs, elevators, long walks from the truck and narrow streets all add labor.

What is the difference between a binding and a non-binding estimate?

A binding estimate sets the price for the items and services listed, so it will not rise unless you add items or services. A non-binding estimate is an approximation, and the final price is based on actual weight and services.

If my estimate is non-binding, how much more could I owe at delivery?

Under federal rules for interstate moves, the mover cannot require you to pay more than the estimate plus 10% at delivery. Any remaining balance is billed later, typically with at least 30 days to pay.

Why does my mover want a walkthrough?

An in-person or video walkthrough is how an estimate gets accurate. A price given without seeing what you own is a guess, and guesses are where moving-day surprises come from.

Where can I see typical price ranges?

Our 2026 moving cost guide lists typical local and long-distance ranges, and what affects moving prices explains each cost driver.

Timing Your Move

How far in advance should I book?

Eight to twelve weeks for a long-distance move, longer for summer. Three to four weeks is usually enough for a local move.

What is the cheapest time of year to move?

Demand drops from late fall through winter, outside the holidays. Midweek and mid-month dates are also easier to book than weekends and month-end.

How long will my long-distance move take?

It depends on distance and route. Neighboring states can take a few days, while coast-to-coast moves take longer. Your coordinator gives you a written pickup and delivery window.

Valuation, Damage and Your Rights

What protection is included?

Released Value Protection is included at no extra charge, but it covers only 60 cents per pound per item. Full Value Protection is available and makes the mover responsible for repair, replacement or a cash settlement at current market value.

How long do I have to file a claim?

For interstate moves, federal rules give you nine months from delivery. The mover must acknowledge a claim within 30 days and generally resolve it within 120 days.

What should I do if something arrives damaged?

Note the damage on the delivery paperwork before you sign, photograph it, keep the packaging and then file a written claim. Our claims page walks through the process.

What documents should my mover give me?

For an interstate move you should receive a written estimate, the federal booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move, an order for service, an inventory and a bill of lading.

Packing Questions

Can I pack my own boxes?

Yes. Be aware that movers are generally not liable for damage inside boxes you packed yourself unless the box itself shows outside damage. Many people pack linens and books themselves and leave fragile rooms to the crew.

What can movers not take?

Hazardous materials such as propane, gasoline, paint thinner, pool chemicals and ammunition. Perishable food and plants are usually excluded on long-distance moves.

Should I empty dressers?

Yes. Full drawers strain furniture joints on a long haul. Pack the contents in boxes instead.

Moving Day and Delivery

Do I need to be present on moving day?

You or someone you authorize should be there at pickup and delivery to review the inventory, sign the bill of lading and answer the crew's questions.

What if my new home is not ready?

Short- and long-term storage can hold your shipment until you have the keys.

Do I need parking permits or elevator reservations?

Often, especially in cities and condo buildings. Reserve elevators and loading docks early and ask your city about truck parking permits.

Pianos, Art and High-Value Pieces

Can you move a piano long distance?

Yes. Uprights and grands are moved with the right padding and equipment. See our long-distance piano relocation page.

How is artwork or marble protected?

With specialty wrapping and custom wooden crates that keep glass, canvas and stone from flexing in transit.

Should I list high-value items separately?

Yes. Tell your mover about anything of unusual value before the move so it is documented on the inventory and covered appropriately.
