Why Pianos Are Different

Weight Is Only Half the Problem

Most people think the hard part of moving a piano is lifting it. Weight matters, but the bigger risk is the instrument itself. A piano holds thousands of parts, from strings and hammers to the action mechanism, that need to stay aligned. Heat, humidity swings and road vibration over a long haul can all cause trouble if the piano is not prepared and secured correctly.

Every instrument also needs its own plan. A century-old grand with original finish is handled very differently from a modern upright. That is why our process starts weeks before pickup, not on moving day.

Piano typeTypical sizeApproximate weight
Upright / verticalMost common in homes400–800 lbs
Baby grand5' to 5'10"500–750 lbs
Parlor / studio grand6' to 6'10"650–900 lbs
Concert grand7' to 9'+900–1,200+ lbs

Weights are general ranges. Your piano's make, model and case affect the actual figure.

Our Process

Five Stages of a Long-Distance Piano Move

Assessment, 2–6 weeks out

We review the piano in person or through photos and measurements, classify it, note existing cracks, loose pins or finish damage, and plan the route out of the house.

Preparation, 1–4 weeks out

We recommend a professional tuning beforehand. Legs, pedals and lyre are removed and padded, keys and finish are protected, and grands are typically crated.

Loading

A crew of at least four for grands uses piano dollies with locking wheels, ramps and custom straps, then blocks the piano near the truck's center of gravity.

Transport

Steady driving, strap and padding checks at stops, and climate-controlled equipment when possible. Nothing is ever stacked on a piano crate.

Delivery and settling

We unload with the same care, reattach legs and pedals, level the instrument and position it. Then it needs time to adjust before a final tuning.

Most piano damage happens during preparation and loading, not out on the highway. Rushing the first few steps is the most common and most expensive mistake.
California Factors

Heat, Hills and Humidity

Inland California summers regularly push past 100°F, and a closed trailer gets hotter. For Valley and Inland Empire pickups we schedule mornings and plan transport to limit heat exposure. Hillside homes in Los Angeles and the Bay Area add steep driveways and stairs, which we handle with stair climbers, extra crew and padding.

The destination matters too. A piano leaving dry Southern California for humid Florida or the Carolinas will react to the change. That is why we advise waiting two to six weeks after delivery before the final tuning, so the wood and strings can settle into the new climate first.

Cost

What Drives the Price of a Piano Move

A long-distance piano move generally runs from $1,500 to $6,000, depending on the type of piano, the distance and the services involved. Crating a grand, navigating stairs or a narrow entry, and moving an antique that needs extra handling all affect the final figure. Moving the piano as part of a full household shipment is often more efficient than shipping it alone.

Protection

If Something Goes Wrong

Released Value Protection is included on every interstate move, but it pays by weight and is rarely enough for a quality instrument. For a piano we strongly suggest Full Value Protection, which covers repair or replacement. Documenting the piano's condition before loading, as we do at assessment, also makes any claim clearer. Our guide on preventing damage in transit explains more.

How far ahead should I schedule a piano move?

Plan 6 to 12 weeks ahead to allow time for assessment, tuning and crating.

Does every piano need a crate?

Grands usually do. Quality uprights can often travel safely with heavy blankets, padding and straps.

Should I tune before or after moving?

Both. Tune 2 to 4 weeks before the move, then again after the piano has settled in its new home.

Can antique pianos be moved long distance?

Yes, with custom crating, extra handling time and careful documentation of condition.

How do you handle stairs?

We use specialized stair climbers, additional crew and protective padding.

What does a long-distance piano move cost?

Generally $1,500 to $6,000 depending on piano type, distance and services. You get a written estimate before booking.
