Between a California driveway and a new home a thousand or more miles away, every item in the truck is tested. Pavement seams send constant vibration through the load, curves push it sideways and every stop pushes it forward. Most transit damage is not caused by a dramatic accident. It comes from small forces repeated for days. Here is how a professional crew counters each one.
Packing Materials Built for Stacking
Grocery-store and retail boxes collapse under the weight of a full tier. Professional crews use heavy-duty corrugated cartons, and double-walled dish packs for kitchenware, because a box at the bottom of a stack may carry hundreds of pounds above it for a week.
- Clean, acid-free packing paper instead of newspaper, whose ink can transfer to china and fabric in heat
- Dishes and plates packed on edge, like records, which handles shock better than stacking flat
- Glasses and stemware in cell-divided cartons
- Mirrors, glass tabletops and framed art in mirror cartons or custom wooden crates
- Every box filled to the top so it cannot crush, with heavy items in small boxes
Preparing Furniture Before It Leaves the House
Pad wrapping
Thick moving blankets cover every wood and finished surface, secured so they cannot slide off in transit.
Stretch wrap
Applied over pads to hold them in place and keep upholstery clean and dry. It should not touch finished wood directly, where it can trap moisture.
Corner guards
Cardboard or plastic guards on dresser and table corners prevent the chips that happen when pieces shift.
Disassembly
Legs, mirrors and glass shelves come off large pieces. Hardware is bagged and labeled so reassembly is quick.
Loading in Tiers
A long-distance trailer is loaded in tiers, vertical sections built wall to wall from the front of the trailer back. Each tier follows the same rule: heavy and solid on the bottom, light and fragile on top.
- FoundationAppliances, dressers and other heavy, square pieces go on the floor against the wall.
- MiddleMedium-weight boxes, such as books and kitchen cartons, fill in and level the tier.
- TopLight boxes, lampshades, cushions and odd shapes go up high where nothing sits on them.
- Fill the gapsMattresses, pads and soft items fill voids so nothing has room to move.
Blocking, Bracing and Tie-Downs
Even a perfect tier will shift under hard braking if it is not secured. Many moving trailers have logistics track, metal rails along the walls, that let crews strap each tier in place every few feet. Load bars and straps stop the load from sliding forward or backward and prevent the domino effect where one shifting tier pushes into the next.
Electronics, Pianos and High-Value Pieces
Televisions travel best in original boxes or in telescoping TV cartons with foam corners. Computers and consoles should be backed up, with cables labeled and packed alongside. Pianos need specialized padding and equipment. See our piano relocation service and our guide to moving fragile items from California.
What You Can Do to Reduce Risk
- Photograph valuable furniture and electronics before moving day
- Empty dresser drawers so the weight does not stress joints
- Defrost and dry the refrigerator so moisture does not reach other goods
- Carry jewelry, documents, medications and irreplaceable items yourself
- Review the inventory condition notes at pickup and again at delivery
How Protection and Claims Work
Released Value Protection is included at no extra charge but pays a limited amount per pound. Full Value Protection makes the mover responsible for repairing, replacing or paying the current market value of a damaged item. For interstate moves you have nine months from delivery to file a claim. Visit our claims page for the steps.
How are electronics protected during a long move?
They are wrapped in protective material and packed in sturdy cartons, with large TVs in telescoping boxes with foam corner supports. Back up data and label cables before packing.
What is Full Value Protection?
A level of liability where the mover agrees to repair a damaged item, replace it with a similar one or pay a cash settlement for its current market value.
Am I covered if I pack my own boxes?
Movers are generally not liable for damage inside boxes you packed yourself unless the carton shows outside damage. Professional packing is recommended for fragile items.
Why shouldn't I use newspaper to pack?
Newsprint ink can transfer to dishes, fabric and upholstery, especially in heat. Use clean packing paper instead.
