Choosing the Road

Three Ways Over the Rockies

The best route depends on where you start in California and the time of year.

Colorado is not a straight shot from anywhere in California. Southern California loads usually climb I-15 through Las Vegas and Utah, then cross the mountains on I-70. Northern California and Bay Area shipments often follow I-80 across Nevada and Wyoming, then drop south into Fort Collins and Denver. In winter, the southern route along I-40 and up I-25 can keep a truck clear of the high passes.

Starting regionTypical corridorBest for
Los Angeles, Orange County, San DiegoI-15 to I-70Denver metro, Grand Junction, mountain towns
Bay Area, SacramentoI-80 to I-25 southFort Collins, Loveland, Boulder, north Denver suburbs
Inland Empire, desert citiesI-40 to I-25 northColorado Springs, Pueblo, winter deliveries

Your driver and coordinator choose the corridor based on weather and road conditions. Most moves from California to Colorado deliver in 3–7 business days.

Between November and April, I-70 over Vail Pass and through the Eisenhower Tunnel can close for snow with little warning. Colorado also enforces traction and chain laws for commercial trucks. We build weather buffers into winter delivery windows and tell you early if conditions shift the date.

Local Conditions

What Is Different About Moving Into Colorado

Altitude

Sealed bottles, aerosol cans and some liquids can leak or burst as the truck climbs above 10,000 feet. We pack them upright and bagged, or suggest they ride with you.

Dry air

Solid wood furniture and pianos can react to the jump from coastal humidity to Colorado's dry climate. Give them time to adjust before tuning or refinishing.

Hillside and foothill homes

Evergreen, Golden and parts of Boulder have steep, narrow driveways. A smaller shuttle truck may carry the last stretch.

Snow at the door

Winter deliveries need cleared walkways. We bring floor protection for wet boots and melting snow.

People come for the outdoors, four true seasons and a flat state income tax that is well below California's top rates. Housing across the Front Range is not cheap anymore, but most buyers still get more space than they had on the coast. If you are comparing states, our cost of living guide for leaving California is a useful starting point.

We are a California-based, FMCSA-licensed interstate carrier with CMA Level 3 certification from the Certified Mover Association. Released Value Protection is included, and you can upgrade to Full Value Protection for your Colorado move.

How long does a California to Colorado move take?

Most moves take 3 to 7 business days depending on pickup city, destination and, in winter, mountain weather.

Do you deliver to mountain towns?

Yes. Along with Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins and Boulder, we deliver to foothill and mountain communities, using a shuttle truck where roads are too narrow for a full trailer.

Should I avoid moving to Colorado in winter?

Not necessarily, but expect a wider delivery window. Spring through fall is the most predictable time to cross the Rockies.

Do you offer packing services?

Yes. We provide full packing, partial packing, specialty protection and crating.

Is my shipment insured?

Released Value Protection is included at no extra cost, and Full Value Protection is available.
