Why So Many Californians Are Moving Out of State
Housing, taxes and space come up in almost every conversation we have with customers.
California still has the coastline, the culture and the jobs. But net outbound migration has continued through 2025 and into 2026, and the reasons are consistent: home prices, rent, state income tax and day-to-day costs. Many households find they can buy more space, shorten their commute or retire earlier somewhere else.
| Factor | California | Southwest (AZ, NV) | South (TX, FL) | Midwest (IL, OH) | Northeast (NY, PA) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Median home price | ≈ $820,000 | ≈ $450,000 | ≈ $350,000 | ≈ $300,000 | ≈ $550,000 |
| State income tax | Up to 13.3% | 0–4.5% | 0% | 3–5% | 4–10% |
| Typical 2-bed rent | ≈ $2,800 | ≈ $1,800 | ≈ $1,600 | ≈ $1,200 | ≈ $2,200 |
| Cost of living index | ≈ 150 | ≈ 110 | ≈ 95 | ≈ 90 | ≈ 125 |

How Moves Change as the Distance Grows
Neighbor states: Nevada, Arizona, Oregon
The shortest interstate moves, often a day or two of driving on I-15, I-10 or I-5. Heat in the desert and snow on the northern passes are the main planning points.
Mountain West: Utah, Idaho, Colorado
Routes cross the Sierra and the Rockies on I-80, I-15 and I-70. Winter moves need buffer days for snow and chain controls.
Texas and the South
Long desert runs on I-10, I-20 and I-40. For Texas, transit is typically 5 to 10 business days, or 7 to 14 door to door.
Southeast and Florida
Cross-country distance plus humidity and hurricane season from June through November. Breathable wrapping matters here.
Midwest
I-80 and I-70 carry most loads. Expect basements, real winters and spring storm season at the other end.
Northeast
The longest hauls we run, ending in tight streets, walk-ups and building rules in cities like New York and Boston.
Routes We Run Regularly
Los Angeles → Dallas
East on I-10 and I-20 into the Metroplex.
San Francisco → Phoenix
Down the valley and across the desert to the Valley of the Sun.
San Diego → Las Vegas
A quick I-15 run, often delivered the same week.
San Jose → Denver
I-80 east over the Sierra toward the Front Range.
Bakersfield → Boise
North through Nevada to Idaho's Treasure Valley.
Fresno → Raleigh
Coast to coast on I-40 to North Carolina's Triangle.
Oakland → Seattle
Straight up I-5 through Oregon to Puget Sound.
Santa Ana → Nashville
East on I-40 to Middle Tennessee.
Irvine → Chicago
A long Midwest haul on I-40 or I-80.
