Moving from California to Alaska

An Alaska move is two journeys in one: the haul north out of California and the final leg by highway or water. We plan both so your household reaches Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau or the Mat-Su Valley intact, typically in 7–14 business days.

Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Kodiak have no road connection to the rest of the state. Moves to Southeast Alaska and the islands finish by water, so book earlier and expect the later end of the delivery window.
How It Works

Getting a Household from California to Alaska

The route depends almost entirely on where in Alaska you are going.

Unlike a move to Texas or Oregon, there is no single interstate that carries you door to door. Shipments head north up the I-5 corridor first. From there, a road-connected destination like Anchorage or Fairbanks can continue overland through Canada on the Alaska Highway, while coastal and island towns rely on barge service from the Pacific Northwest.

Your coordinator chooses the combination that fits your address, your timing and the size of your shipment, then gives you one delivery window covering the whole trip. Most moves from California to Alaska land within 7 to 14 business days of pickup.

Routing is confirmed at booking. Weather and sailing schedules can shift timing, especially from late fall through early spring.

Where People Land

Alaska Communities We Deliver To

Anchorage

Home to roughly 40% of the state's residents and most of the military and healthcare jobs.

Wasilla and Palmer

Mat-Su Valley homes with acreage, gravel drives and long setbacks from the road.

Fairbanks

Interior moves timed around deep winter cold and short daylight.

Juneau

The capital, reached only by sea or air, with hillside streets downtown.

Kenai and Soldotna

Peninsula households, many tied to fishing and energy work.

Sitka, Ketchikan and Kodiak

Island communities where sailing dates set the schedule.

Packing for the North

What to Ship, What to Sell, What to Buy There

Freight costs to Alaska make it worth thinking about every heavy item. A worn sofa or a garage full of patio furniture may cost more to ship than to replace. On the other hand, good furniture, tools and outdoor gear are expensive in remote towns, so many families bring more than they would on a shorter move.

  • Ship quality furniture, mattresses and tools; sell bulky items that are near the end of their life
  • Pack winter clothing in a clearly labeled box that rides on the truck last and comes off first
  • Drain water from appliances and hoses so nothing freezes and cracks in transit
  • Keep passports, birth certificates and medication with you, since you may cross into Canada
  • Crate artwork, mirrors and glass tops for the extra handling a barge transfer adds

Our long-distance packing guide covers wrapping and labeling in more detail, and our crews can handle the job for you through our packing services.

Timing

Best Seasons to Move North

Late spring through early fall is the easiest window. Roads are clear, daylight is long and barge schedules are at their most frequent. Winter moves are possible to road-connected cities, but snow, ice and short days on the Alaska Highway can add days. If you have flexibility, ask us to quote two dates so you can compare.

Plan 8–12 weeks out

Alaska moves need more lead time than lower 48 moves, especially in summer when military and seasonal workers relocate.

Confirm the route

We confirm whether your final leg is overland or by water and give you a delivery window.

Pack and load in California

Everything is wrapped, inventoried and loaded for the long trip north.

Transfer and final leg

Your shipment continues by road or barge with updates from your coordinator.

Delivery and setup

Furniture is placed, beds reassembled and the inventory checked off with you.

Alaska has no state personal income tax, and residents who qualify receive the annual Permanent Fund Dividend, which is part of why the move appeals to working families. Housing and groceries, though, often cost more than people expect, so budget carefully for the first few months.
