California sends more residents to other states than almost anywhere in the country, mostly to Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Colorado. Leaving from Los Angeles, the Bay Area or San Diego adds complications: tight parking, HOA and high-rise rules, long traffic delays and weather that changes sharply along the route. Plan on 8 to 16 weeks from first decision to delivery for the smoothest result.

Choose Your Moving Window

Timing is the first and most consequential decision. Peak season runs from late spring through September, when trucks fill up and prices rise. Moving in January, February, October or November can save up to 35%, with cooler loading days and easier scheduling. Avoid major holidays and school start and end dates unless you have no choice.

  • Lease end or home closing dates at both ends
  • Job start dates and school enrollment deadlines
  • Route weather: Sierra Nevada snow in winter, desert heat in summer
  • Pet travel and family schedules

Build a Budget With a Buffer

For a three-bedroom home, long-distance moves from California commonly run $3,000–$15,000+ depending on distance, weight and services. The mover's charges are the largest piece, but they are not the only one.

Declutter Before Anyone Quotes You

Interstate pricing is largely weight-based, so every item you sell or donate lowers the bill. Start six to eight weeks out. Kitchens, closets and garages hold the most weight. Our guide to lightening your load has a full method.

Vet and Hire a Licensed Interstate Carrier

  1. Check the USDOT numberLook it up on the FMCSA SAFER system and confirm active household goods authority.
  2. Know who you are hiringFind out whether the company is a carrier or a broker. Our carrier vs. broker guide explains why it matters.
  3. Get written estimates after a walkthroughAsk for a binding or binding not-to-exceed estimate so your price is set in writing.
  4. Choose valuation coverageReleased Value Protection is basic. Full Value Protection gives repair, replacement or market-value settlement.
  5. Read before you signReview the estimate, order for service and the booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.

Not sure whether a company is a mover or a middleman? Our carrier vs. broker guide shows how to check in a few minutes.

Red flags: a quote far below everyone else's, no USDOT number, a demand for a large cash deposit, or a price given without seeing what you own.

Pack Smart, Room by Room

Packing is where most damage starts. Put heavy items like books in small boxes, use dish packs for kitchenware and label every box with room and contents. Defrost the fridge a day or two before loading. If you would rather hand it off, professional packing can cover the whole home or only fragile rooms.

Handle Mail, Utilities and Records

  • Forward mail through USPS two to four weeks before the move
  • Schedule utility shutoff at the old home and start-up at the new one
  • Update banks, cards, insurance and subscriptions
  • Request school, medical and veterinary records

Moving Day and Delivery Day

At pickup, walk through with the crew, review the inventory and its condition notes, and read the bill of lading before you sign. Keep valuables, documents and medications with you. At delivery, check items against the inventory and note any damage on the paperwork before signing. For interstate moves you have nine months from delivery to file a claim.

Settle Into Your New State

Each state sets its own deadline for a new driver license and vehicle registration, often within 10 to 60 days of residency. Enroll children in school, find new doctors and update insurance. Our first-week priorities guide lists what to do first.
